Researchers at Abu Dhabi’s Technology Innovation Institute are developing ceramic reverse-osmosis membranes that could last about 20 years instead of the three to four years typical of polymer membranes, cutting replacement and maintenance costs for desalination plants. The ceramic body carries a special internal coating that performs the salt separation, and the team expects water recovery to gain 10 to 20 percentage points on top of the 40-45 percent reached by conventional systems. A pilot on a real-world rig is planned by end-2026, with manufacturing handover targeted for 2027.
