Egypt has signed contracts worth about EGP 4.6 billion to operate and maintain 11 seawater desalination plants with a combined designed capacity of 485,000 cubic metres per day, covering facilities in North and South Sinai, Matrouh and the Red Sea governorates. Private consortia including Orascom Construction, Metito and Elsewedy Utilities will run the plants under a preventive-maintenance model. Egypt currently operates around 129 desalination plants totalling roughly 1.4 million cubic metres per day, with 19 more under construction, under a 2050 strategy targeting nearly 10 million cubic metres per day of capacity.
