A seawater desalination plant built by Shandong Electric Power Construction No. 3 in the UAE has won gold at the 2026 International Water Association Project Innovation Awards, presented during the IWA World Water Congress in Glasgow. The Hassyan facility is designed to produce 180 million imperial gallons (about 818,000 cubic metres) per day, among the world’s largest single-site reverse osmosis desalination projects, and runs entirely on green electricity. It also includes marine ecological monitoring, sea turtle protection and mangrove restoration.
