Taiwan, China’s Water Resources Agency held a groundbreaking ceremony for the Tainan Seawater Desalination Plant on 20 October 2026, the region’s first publicly funded and largest seawater desalination facility. The first phase will supply 100,000 cubic metres of desalinated water per day, rising to 200,000 cubic metres per day at full build-out, with total investment of about NT$20.9 billion. Officials said the plant will diversify water sources and strengthen supply resilience for households and industry in the south during droughts.
